Another Weekend...

Just a few fun pictures of what I've been up to the last week. This past week in Crossfit we worked on maxing out our weights on different lifts. Since it was my first time doing that I PR'd on all of them, but I think I did pretty well overall on them considering it's only my 3rd month of this stuff! Here's me maxing out my deadlift...205#!
Sunday I had my first mountain biking experience. Ryan and his buddy took me out to a nearby mountain and I tried out Ryan's old bike. We only went on the easiest trail this time, but I started to get the hang of it pretty quickly and it was a lot of fun! I won't be doing any crazy jumps and time soon, but it was fun just going up and down the mountain.

Momma in Town!

I got an extra long weekend this past weekend to spend time with my little mom! She flew into town Wednesday night pretty late. Thursday afternoon I introduced mom to Crossfit! I love that Crossfit is something anyone can do and you can easily modify each workout to fit people of all different fitness levels. I got a good quick workout in and mom got to learn about muscle strengthening, which is super important!

Friday was a big day. We drove over to the north side of Mt Rainier and did the Noble Knob hike. It was a beautiful sunny and 80 degree day which was awesome! As we got to the top of the ridge we also got some great views of Mt Rainier. It was a little hazy at the peak though so it was a little tough to see. Ben had lots of fun running around like crazy too.
When we got home we cleaned up and got ready for a fancy dinner out! Our fall wine shipment had just come in and the place we go to pick it up is a nice little tapas restaurant/wine bar. We figured since we needed to go pick up our wine we should go get some food too. It was also a good excuse to get mom all dressed up ;)
After our dinner we got to pick up Lauren from the airport! She got in pretty late and we had all had a pretty long day, so we went back to the house for the night. Saturday morning the three of us road tripped it down to Portland for the night. Again it was an amazingly beautiful day out, so it was awesome wandering around the city. We started out walking along the waterfront. I love the portland waterfront. If we had more time I would have loved to just lay down on one of the huge grassy lawns and read a book. We wandered through the Saturday markets which was full of all kinds of art and food and ended up at Voodoo Donuts which is a famous little shop full of bizarre little creations. We got a half down donuts to take back to the hotel. After dropping off donuts we found a little bar/cafe to grab some lunch in and sit out on their patio for a while.
We spent the rest of the day wandering around the city including a lengthy stop in to Powell's bookstore. We ended up at the Portland City Grill on the 30th floor of one of the buildings downtown (thanks to Leigha's suggestion!) for happy hour and to get a great view of the sun setting over the city.
We spent the rest of the night eating donuts, drinking wine, and playing games in the hotel room. So much fun! Sunday morning we headed out of the city to a big waterfall about half an hour away. We took the mile hike up to the top of it and had some great views of the Columbia River.
We hurried back to Seattle Sunday night so Ryan and I could make it to our Lindy Hop Dance class. Lauren headed back to SF Monday morning and Mom and I spent the day getting her hair did, shopping, and wandering around the neighborhood. This morning in the wee hours I took Mom to the airport on the way to work. It was a great little vacation, I always love visitors!

Homemade

We had a lovely Labor Day weekend which didn't involve any hectic traveling or doing too much craziness. Instead we did the whole homeowner thing and worked on the house and I did a little baking! We did a little yard work but the thing I was most excited about was our new interior decor. We moved around a few bookcases back into the laundry room to make more open space in the main room and also to uncover one of the windows. Once we had all open windows we also hung up new floor to ceiling curtains! I've been paining over curtains for a while now wanted to make some but unable to find a good fabric and wanting to buy some but they were all so expensive (or at least the ones I wanted were). Finally I found some simple and really long ones at IKEA and went for those ones. I love the way they turned out! We also hung a more decorative accent curtain over the window next to our new teal door. The curtain matches some new throw pillows we got too.
New Curtains
Ben thinks the new pillows are for him...SPOILED!
Another project we finally finished this weekend was our kitchen table. We started it a while ago but needed to trim down the last piece to make it fit and finish it. We did that this weekend and put a sealer on it and finally have it in place at the end of the kitchen island. We can be big kids and eat at a table now!
Table Construction
While doing lots of house work I also took a little tile to make a few batches of scones.
Blueberry Scones
Ingredients:
2 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 cup packed brown sugar
1 tablespoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup butter, chilled
1 cup fresh blueberries
3/4 cup half-and-half cream
1 egg

Directions:
1.Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
2.Cut butter into mixture of flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Add blueberries and toss to mix.
3.In separate bowl beat together cream and egg, and slowly pour into dry ingredients, stirring with rubber scraper until dough forms. Knead just until it comes together, 3 or 4 times. Don't overhandle.
4.Divide dough in half. On lightly floured board, shape each half into a 6-inch round. Cut into 6 wedges.
5.Bake on ungreased sheet about 20 minutes at 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Serve warm!!
Strawberry Lemonade Scones (these were my favorite!)

8 medium strawberries, quartered
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
3 tablespoons sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
5 tablespoons cold butter
1 cup heavy cream
Juice from half a lemon

Icing:
Juice from half a lemon
Powdered Sugar

Preheat your oven to 425 degrees.

Arrange your cut strawberries in a single layer and press down on them with a paper towel to remove some of the moisture.

Combine the flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt into a large bowl. Cut your cold butter into small pieces and then mix with a pastry blender or two forks until it resembles coarse crumbs. Gently fold in your pressed strawberries. Add in the cold cream and lemon juice and shape the dough into a ball. Form it into a flat circle about one inch thick on your counter. Cut into 8 wedges. Place the wedges on a greased baking sheet. Bake for 12-15 minutes until light brown. Let cool on a wire rack for about 10 minutes before serving.
Ginger Peach Scones
[I halved this recipe]
4 c. flour
4 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
5 tbs. sugar
2/3 c. cold unsalted butter, cut into pieces
2/3 c. half and half
1 c. plain greek yogurt
1 tsp. vanilla
2 c. of fresh peaches, skin peeled off, cut into roughly 1/2″ cubes (or smaller)
1/3 c. candied ginger, chopped very finely
3 tbs. sugar
1/4 tsp. vanilla
1) Preheat the oven to 440ยบ.
2) Whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and sugar.
3) add the cold butter to the bowl and cut with a pastry cutter until the butter chunks are just shy of pea sized.
4) in a separate bowl, mix the half and half and greek yogurt together (you can substitute the yogurt for sour cream if you want to)
5) Add this to the dry ingredients along with the peaches and ginger. Mix until just incorporated.
6) plop the batter (it should be fairly sticky) out onto a floured surface and use a rolling pin to roll it into 1/2″ thick rectangle.
7) Use either knife/pastry blade to cut the dough into triangles, or use a biscuit cutter for rounds. Place onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
8) In a wee little bowl, mix the remaining sugar and vanilla together. Spread a little bit onto the top of each scone before putting into the oven.
9) bake until golden brown… this will depend on the size and thickness of your scone. Mine took about 8 minutes, but were modest-sized scones.

Sharpshooter

Yesterday I spent the morning at the shooting range qualifying on a 9mm pistol. We started off with a intro to the different movements we'd be tested on then went straight into the test! They make you do a few different motions at different distances then grade you on your accuracy. You need at least 180 points to qualify and 204 points to earn sharp shooter and 228 points to earn expert. The test went really fast and I had no idea what was going on! As a result I totally failed! Luckily they let me try again with the group right after ours. I guess I just needed a little practice first because the second time around I made enough points to get sharpshooter. That made me feel much better about myself! Now I feel like I actually know how to shoot a pistol, and kind of want to do it again soon!

Whidbey Wedding!

This weekend we went to my old roommate, Sarah's, wedding! Sarah and Allan actually started dating while we were roommates, so I got to know them both pretty well and it was awesome to get to be there while they tied the knot too! It was a beautiful day for an outdoor wedding and I think I even got a little tan during the ceremony! The wedding was at a little farm on Whidbey Island. The ceremony was in front of a little garden and the wedding party walked in from the other side of a lake which was awesome!
Sarah escorted down the aisle by her dad!
First Kiss!
The new Mr and Mrs Robbins!
After the ceremony we enjoyed the sunshine around the lake until the reception started in the barn. It was also beautiful with string lights hung everywhere and a chandelier on the end. It was also a lot of fun hanging out with a great group of the people who I used to work with up in Oak Harbor.  Sarah looked absolutely stunning in her dress and Allan was just beaming with happiness since I'm pretty sure he wanted to marry Sarah the moment he met her! They're such a fun couple and I'm so glad we got to be there to see them start the next part of their lives!

Bachelorettes and Bare Feet

Ryan got to have all the excitement Friday night, but I had lots of excitements Saturday night and Sunday morning! Saturday night I headed over to Bellevue for a little bachelorette party for my old roomie in Whidbey Island, Sarah! She's getting married next weekend, I can't wait, it's going to be so much fun! There were 10 of us ladies all dressed in our little black dresses while Sarah got to practice wearing white for the night. We started out at Black Bottle, a little tapas restaurant, with some great food and drinks to get the night started.
After dinner we walked around the corner to a big comedy club/billiard hall/dance club. We all had tickets to the comedy show that night and when we got there there was a huge line to get in so we got a little nervous that we wouldn't get to sit together even though we had called in advance to make reservations. One of the bouncers was nice enough to get the manager who escorted us past the line into the club to a table all together. About 10 minutes later she came back to our table and said another group didn't show up so we could move to their table a little closer to the stage, so we did...oh the perks of a bachelorette party ;)
After the show we headed into the into the bar/club area and spent the night doing a little bachelorette scavenger hunt (getting random strangers to do things) and dancing the night away! It was so much fun to go out with all the girls and I can't wait to get Sarah all married up next weekend!

After getting home a little after 2 in the morning, I got about 3 hours of sleep before I had to get up again, this time to run a 10k! A few weeks ago I got my first pair of five finger shoes because I wanted to use them to run this race. Most of the people were just running in normal running shoes, but this race had a specific division just for 'barefoot' runners which included five finger shoes. The prize for winning that division was a bottle of barefoot wine. Apparently that's good motivation for me because I ran by far my fastest 10k yet and won that bottle of wine! I was the fastest female in the barefoot division.

If you remember a few months ago I wrote a post about how excited I was to run my fastest 5k in 23:23 with a pace of 7:31/mile. Well this time in a 10k with many more hills and I ran in a time of 45:16 with an average pace of 7:18/mile. That means I had 2 back to back 5ks that were way faster than my last 5k best time! I ended up as the 11th fastest female in the race and I won my bottle of wine, so I was a happy girl. And that was after only 3 hours of sleep!

Finally, this one's for Sarah and Leigha ;) We did a little girls night this past week at Betty in downtown Queen Anne. I love living so close together that we can meet up on a random weeknight and hang out! Love these girls!

Goruck

Last night Ryan and a few of his Crossfit buddies pulled an all nighter 'for fun'. They participated in the Goruck challenge in downtown Seattle. It's an event that travels from city to city and brings a team of people together to participate in a boot camp like challenge throughout the night that goes all over the city. The big kicker is that while they're doing all this they have to be carrying around their 'Goruck' pack on their back that had 6 bricks in it along with all the food/water they needed for the night...it was heavy! They started out at the Great Wheel (the new Seattle farris wheel) which is super pretty at night as the sun sets! The event was supposed to kick off at 9pm, but the spent about the first hour filling out paperwork (death waivers) and getting organized as a team. One of the people on Ryan's team was Jack Osbourne (as in Ozzy Osbourne's son!). That was kind of awesome. I definitely would not have recognized him is Ryan didn't point it out.

The guys lining up. The first 4 guys in the front row and a few of the guys behind them are Ryan's Crossfit buddies.
Lined up in their team. Jack Osbourne is the second one to the right with the tan hat on.

Once they finally got going their leader (kind of like drill instructor without all the yelling) led them around a few blocks and headed towards a big open pier on the water. That's where all the 'fun' started.
They were at the pier for about 2-3 hours were they were made to go back and forth across it as a team doing different things like bear crawl, wheel barrow, lunges, dead man carries, and many other things. At each end they had to do things like burpees, pushups, or any other thing the leader could think of. All of this with their heavy packs on.
Bear crawling
Wheel Barrow
Smurf Jacks (jumping jacks in the squating position)
Back to Back squats
Dead Man Carries (Ryan is the one carrying in the front)
Burpees! (Ryan's in the front w/ Jack Osbourne next to him)
At this point in time (about midnight) I was pretty chilly and sleepy and a little bit bored watching them go back and forth, so I headed home to bed. Ryan got to have more fun for the next 10 hours. Apparently they trekked up to the Space Needle and did some more things there (including wrestling matches) then went all the way over to West Seattle to Alki Beach where they were lucky enough to have to go into the freezing cold water of the Puget Sound! They did all kind of exercises in the water and eventually headed back downtown to the Great Wheel where I got a call at about 10am asking to come pick them up. Needless to say Ryan is exhausted today! We went straight from the event to one of the guys house where his wife had cooked up breakfast for everyone. After a little food we headed home for some much needed nap time for Ryan!
The Guys before (the one guy just had a baby a week ago)
The Guys after...Ryan looks less than thrilled
